Chicago Surface Lines Peter Witt One Man Car

Paul Mayer has painted another CSL Peter Witt in a green livery.

In the early 50ies, some dozen of the famous "Sedans" were transformed to one man operation. The single center door was removed and the double door reduced to the half. 

Sadly, this green cars never run in revenue service in Chicago.

It looks like this when Master Mechanics Paul Mayer painted and lettered a resin printed carbody of my CSL Peter Witt 3D model. The result is amazing. The car is nearly ready for the streets of Chicago....

The model was mounted on a Bachmann drive and the trolley pole and some other details added. Just the glasses and the destination signs are to come.

Chicago Surface Lines "Sedan" One man car in H0 scale

In the early 50ies, some dozen of the famous CSL Peter Witt "Sedans" were transformed to one man operation.

The single center door was removed and the double door reduced to the half. The replacement windows had rounded corners. Sadly, this cars never run in revenue service.

But you can make them run in H0 scale, as I added the carbody to my 3D print collection.

Paul Mayer has one of the rare photos of this car and  helped me with all informations needed to reproduce this car. Paul is also working on a decal set.

Chicago Surface Lines "Sedan" in H0 scale

By the end of the 20ies, Chicago Surface Line ordered a batch of 100 modern streetcars built following the principles of Peter Witt. In Chicago, this modern cars were called "Sedans". This fine model is the fruit of six month of slow but patient work with Paul Mayer (shorelinedecals.com). Drawings, photos, 3D renderings, beta prints were sent from continent to continent. In fact, we never met, but I hope that will change. This model is my first fully riveted printed carbody, and the shell is clipping over the Bachmann drive (a little tricky, but it works). Screwholes are provided under the roof to support the Bachmann circuit board. The HO scale carbody of this SL "Sedan" is available here: http://i.materialise.com/gallery/59b2c630-998a-48b0-8a9a-5f078b8ccdfa .

Traction madneess? Take the electric ambulance ...

David Mummery is writing a blog called "Traction Madness, modeling Insull's Empire" .

If you are feeling mad, Chicago Surface Lines may detain the answer : They rode in the 20ies a "Psychopathic Hospital Car". This were in fact ambulance cars, with separate compartments for men and women, equipped with seats, beds and toilets.

This cars have probably carried mental ill out of the town to a hospital. It is clear, if we can joke now about it, in this time it was in fact not funny, not for the patients, and not for the accompanying staff.
